Bob Wong is an evolutionary biologist. I love knowing an evolutionary biologist - I feel smarter just by saying it. Anyway... here is another fabulous Melbourne home that I got to spend a morning hanging out in. Bob lives here with his partner, Nathan Geary, and as you can see, they love a bit of art. Bob's knowledge of the art and artists is, you guessed it, very good, and you can tell this collection has been put together with a load of passion. My favourite piece is the Yawkyawk sculpture, with its delicate little tufts of magpie goose feathers.

A big thanks to Bob and Nathan for sharing their amazing home with Sunday Life readers. Aside from pale pink and inky black being one of my favourite colour combos, I am a sucker for some ballet chic. Flat shoes, tiaras and tulle get me going every time. I loved coming up with this ballet inspired homewares page that ran in the Sunday Age M magazine this morning. It is me to a tee!

It's back! I missed the flower wall too much so it has been re-installed in the hallway.

And may I pre-empt any discussions regarding how the bearded, six-foot-five member of this household feels about the proliferation of pinkness here by stating that he has no truck with the prevailing colour/gender paradigm. And on many times I have offered him a little piece of wall, or a shelf on which to display his Carlton memorabilia, or a Weg poster, or a Warney doll, and he has always politely declined.

So he's down with the pink, OK? How else would I have stuck those rose pictures up so high at 10.30 last night. Onya Jez. xxxx

a new lease for the linen curtains

This week has been full of reconnaissance missions. I have been out on the road scouting for homes to feature in Sunday Life, and boy, there are some beautiful homes around Melbourne that I can't wait to share with everyone.

More than once I have come home with a serious house crush. No less than four times did I come home and want to weep when I looked at our hideous floorboards that are yet to be sanded and limewashed. And many times I came home with a great idea that I immediately put into action. Case in point - Annebelle's curtains. These linen curtains were bought at IKEA some time before we moved to Sydney, so that makes them about eight years old. They have been great, but were starting to yellow, and I was just a bit over them. Then at an AMAZING home I saw in Prahran, the clever homeowner had exactly the same curtains which she had dyed black, and the result was gorgeous. A quick trip to Spotty for some dye to pop into the machine and now the moody, slubby, black linen has given Belle's bedroom a great new look.

my dining room, taken on my iphone this morning

Funny how looks can belie the truth. Here is my dining room this morning - a picture of calm and serenity. I was mucking about, trying out some looks for a table top shoot I styled here today with the incredible photographer Ben King (nup, no relation!). On the surface all was white, pure and quiet, whilst in my head, a zillion thoughts raged and competed for attention...

-what on earth is wrong with our darling cat Sugar? He's been on a drip at the vet for five days and we just can't work out what is wrong with him. Things are looking pretty grim.

-will Allie make it through a full day of school today? She has been wobbly since her e.n.t. operation last Friday (she didn't. And I think I got a speeding fine on my way to collect her. Grrr, so dumb)

-will those couriers ever arrive? (they did).

-I hope that the beautiful print that is precariously balanced in the back of my car doesn't break. (it didn't. phew).

-Shit - I am on deadline for XXX. And I have to submit XXXX. Like, today.

Sometimes I am so grateful that I can slip into my world of work and shut down the hypertensive, temple-throbbing world outside. Escapism is good. Even just for a moment. Escaped anywhere lately?

the passing of the old-school op shop: a lament...

Endangered species - the proper op shop.

OK, warning, this is a rant. So settle in, if you please...

The situation I am talking about is not exactly new, but it is reaching epidemic proportions. I'm talking about the demise of the old-school, slightly whiffy, full-of-tripping-hazards, op shop. Yes, they are an endangered species. It started a while back - clothes racks that were once haphazardly stocked with garments of wildly varied styles, colours and sizes, suddenly started to look at lot 'smarter'. Those racks, that once upped the heart rate of all oppy-lovers, have been replaced with neatly divided sections, arranged strictly according to size, style, and colour (sometimes even divided into shades of said colour). Just like a department store. Or Country Road.

It's the same with the kitchenware and manchester areas. Where once, old cardboard boxes, filled with endless potential, were stuffed onto wobbly shelves, they have been replaced with neatly curated displays - china with china, pillow cases with pillow cases, pottery with pottery. Is it just me - or has the thrill of the chase gone?

Of course I realise that the oppy's had to get on their game - sometimes really valuable stuff was being snapped up for a song by dealers and re-sellers, and thus, robbing the wonderful charities that benefit from these shops of much needed funds. Op shops need pro valuers to ensure this doesn't happen. But now, everything on display feels like someone else has had the joy of discovery, like they got there first. You almost know that if you find something interesting it's going to be a fluke!

And I know the op-shops don't just exist for hipsters to get their vintage on - they do serve a legitimate service for people on a tight budget. Which brings me to my next point - how expensive are so many oppy's now? And it's dumb stuff that seems to get marked up. Just the other day I saw a Sportsgirl top, probably three seasons old, priced at only a bit less than it would have been bought for back then. As my daughter Alex said, "as if!". In many cases now, the pricing is way off the mark.

I know I'm going to sound like a total 'back-in-my-day-er', but when I see the new branding of op shops and the styled-up window displays and in-store merchandising, I am left cold. Freezing in fact. Even the re-located Salvo's store in the old Patterson's Cakes building on Chapel street, with its industrial-chic fit-out, does nothing for me. It's cool, but I don't want my op shops to be cool. I want dead bugs in the window, alongside knitted toilet roll holders, torn copies of old knitting patterns, and creepy looking dolls. I want to get that old buzz, when you could practically smell some gold in there. Something unique and special that you had to get down on your knees and dig for.

So, if you're a passionate op-shopper like me, and you find yourself down the back of the stores, straining your neck to get a look inside the 'Staff Only' area, just knowing that the good stuff is all out there, you are not alone. We have entered the era of the sanitized, curated op-shop. Sob.

I love taking the Sunday Age M magazine Savvy Shopper shoots out of the usual studio setting to a beautiful new location. This one was shot at the amazing Franque, where importer Sarah Hook showcases her finds from France and Belgium in a beautiful apartment overlooking Port Philip Bay. The theme of the shoot was an inspirational setting in which to pen an intimate love letter. How beautiful are those wood and plaster angels? They once formed part of the frame of an ornate mirror in a chateau - can you imagine how amazing that mirror would have been?

At this time of the year, it's not hard to see hearts everywhere you look. Yep, the annual retail event to celebrate passionate love is here again (l'll post my Valentine's Day Savvy Shopper page later on today). But even old valentine-cynic me had to stop and swoon at this PDA on Albert Park Lake this morning. These lovely swans were doing an almost Bolero-esque dance sequence - either that or they were about to do battle - cos it's hard to tell sometimes!

My life with Laura...

I rocked some serious Laura Ashley in the 70's. Knee length; floor length; yards and yards of sweet little cream floral prints on olive green and drab brown backgrounds. I remember Peter Pan collars, and long layered skirts. There may have even been a straw hat involved. And if I could be arsed climbing up into the cupboards I could give you some embarrassing photographic evidence, but frankly I think you can live without it.

In the early 80s I had the Laura Ashley home crush, bad. Metres and metres of festooned pale yellow and white vertical striped curtains draped every window, held back by huge tasselly, swaggy tie-backs. There were way too many over-plump cushions on the couch. My bed linen was so busy that it would give me bad dreams if I tried to sleep under it now. Ooh, and I remember many wallpaper borders -anywhere I could whack them. And dried hydrangeas, Or was that just me?

And here I am in 2012, loving Laura again. These images of the latest home collection are super-cute and retro-inspired and I think old Laura's descendants are doing a really good job of keeping her brand current. I want me some. Even if only so I can have a giggle at myself in twenty years time.

wake up to Chrissie and Jane tomorrow

I am not a massive morning radio listener. It's all a bit, you know, early, for me. But now I, and all of you lucky Melbourne chicks, have a great reason to tune in to 101.1. Tomorrow morning, from 6am 'til 9am, (and every weekday morning after that!), my very lovely and way talented mate, Jane Hall, and her very lovely and way talented mate, Chrissie Swan will grace the airwaves with their all-girl breakfast radio show on Mix. I have a very good feeling about this - and I don't know if it's kosher to say it, but if this show is anything like the breath of fresh air that The Circle was to morning TV, then it is a sure-fire winner. These girls are known for their style, sassy intellect, warmth and honesty. I saw them in action getting celeb vox-pops at the Chorus Line premiere last night - and they crack me up. They will be joined by the extremely onto-it anchorman Jamie Rowe - and man, will he have a job getting a word in edgeways! So, whether you're are making brekky, doing school drop-off, or (as many of my friends are) rostered on for the rowing training run, here is something worth listening to - Go girls! Can't wait.

sweet Sydney treats..

The gorgeous Zumbo concept store at The Star - please excuse dodgy iphone pics.

We spent the long weekend in Sydney catching up with our mates, which was grand, and Alex and I also caught up on some sweet Sydney treats. First up was the Donna Hay General Store in Woollahra - heart shaped lollypops for Al and the amazingly delicious chocolate covered snakes for me. OMJ they are good.

On Saturday night Al and I went to see the gorgeous production of Annie at the Lyric Theatre, and popped into the nearby Adriano Zumbo concept store - how cute is the decor? All very Wonker-esque and kooky. We shared two macarons - the Musk Stick and the Chocolate/Raspberry. Both were amazing! The only thing sweeter on the night was the divine 'Groodle' (golden retriever/poodle, I believe) who almost stole the show from all those gorgeous orphans.

My new best lolly - the chocky snakes from Donna Hay. Even the green ones were good!

It's time to Feb-Sep fast...

So many of my friends are talking up FebFast. I know I should join them, but you know, it's a leap year and all that, and 29 days seems like such a very long time sans booze. Howevs, I am attempting an even more challenging state of denial - it's the Feb-Sept shopping fast. That's right, I am attempting the trickiest fast of them all, given that I am paid to go and find lovely things in stores. We are madly saving for a family trip to New York in October, so I am endeavouring to swear off shopping for a while. But, I managed to sqeeze in a little pre-fast treat today, unable to resist the ghoul-cute charms of this skull bracelet by Wizzer and Whyte, from Hut 13 in Armadale.

Yep, it's nil by purse from now on. Promise.

Oh man. Wrong place. Wrong time. I was glancing through the Feb issue of my favourite UK home mag, Living etc, this morning and nearly fell off my chair. Oh my jesus, Living etc is running two days of house tours in North and West London and MY FAVOURITE HOME EVER will be open for inspection. Yes, spotted in the ad is the home (five storey mansion, actually) of UK uber-stylist Marianne Cotterill.

I have obsessed over this home for years. I can't imagine how many hours I have spent gazing at pages and screens, whenever it has been featured. There is something magical about this home that makes me sigh, and swallow a lot. I would kill to see the garden. And I could happily die in that stained glass entry hall.

Alas, I will not be in London in March. I casually mentioned popping over there to Jem, assuring him that I'd be so quick, he wouldn't know I was gone. He did that expert wife-reverse-psychology thing and said, "Sure babe, go." After which he knows I'll say, "No, I can't".

I guess I'll just have to keep my obsession in check, and get by with my lovingly tattered copies of Living etc. And keep sighing at the screen. Daily. You can see what I am talking about here.

Doormats and doorstops - a round-up...

Everyone I know seems to be doing the big New Year clean-up and chuck-out. Wardrobes, desks, bathroom cupboards and fridges are getting the once-over. I know I found some downright embarrassing use-by dates lurking at the back of a few shelves. And seven once-used jars of green curry paste - big eeuuw!

I have also been inspired to clean up our front veranda, and to replace our crazy fake grass doormat. But, after doing this Savvy Shopper round-up of the best in stylish doormats and doorstops, I can't decide which one to go with. Frontrunner at this stage has to be the big Hare mat by Droog from here.

It's the Pip Studio 'Memories' wallpaper, and it comes in six panels.

It's no secret that I adore the work of Melbourne design team, Poulier & Poulier. Here is the latest addition to their collection, the Straight Shooter print, which references the 1970's police target silhouette sheets. I'd put it in a black frame, and hang it next to my trophy collection. Then, no doubt, I'd pop a ridiculously girlie vase of pink peonies or something next to it. Cos thats how it seems to happen around here.

Fresh start...

I love shaking things up a bit in the new year. So after tackling the disaster that was my desk, yesterday I took to our bedroom with a vengeance. The bed of roses is gone, and we have started the patching and repainting, readying the walls for a whole new look. A few pangs of regret - gee I loved those roses - but it's in with the new here. Progress picture below and I'll post the new look when I'm done.

Here is a Savvy Shopper page I styled what seems like a brazillion years ago, but only ran in The Sunday Age M magazine on New Years Day. We lucked in on a fabulously sunny day for the shoot, and also lucked in on an equally fab location! This is my mate Jen's back deck, and Mike took the shot from an upstairs bedroom. The table and limey green chairs are from Tait, the yellow umbrella is from Oeke, the Acapulco chairs are from Kiitos, the punch bowl is from Freedom, the wooden bowls are from Country Road and the barbeque and the solar lamp are Jamie Durio Patio for Big W. when two blogs collide...

Tuesday was a cracker of a day. We were just back from a break on the coast, but instead of slipping into the vile post-holiday doldrums, we had a little party instead! Well, when I say we, I mean everyone but Jem, who went straight back to work that morning. Poor sucker. This plan was hatched last week, when my mate Mich, the uber-food blogger called with a champion idea. She and her family were in Melbourne for Christmas with her dad, and she realised that it was almost a year to the day since she started her blog. And, it's almost two years since my first very wobbly and tentative blog-steps, so why didn't we have a little party and do a joint post? Indulge ourselves in a little back-slapping blog love? I was sold before she event mentioned chocolate pavlova and champagne!

Mich and her troops (bf Max, girls Jemima and Frank, baby Wilco and dog Mazzi Starr) arrived with their usual truck-load of edible goodies (pretty sure her life's mission is to single-handedly keep the entire Aussie organic food scene afloat). Then we set to work in the kitchen. Well, when I say we, I mean Mich. I was way too busy talking, and catching upon all of the Paddington goss. And drinking French bubbly.

The kids all had a ball. Allie and Jemima took up where they left off, as former classmates, band-members and soccer team players do. They were our chief bowl, beater and spoon lickers. Annebelle completely fell in love with baby Wilco (so not hard to do), and did some expert nail and body painting with Frank. The dogs tried very, very hard to be good, and not to eat the pavlova (though Dougal thought he was in heaven when we slipped a few raspberries his way).

We enjoyed some impromptu performances, with Frank on the piano, accompanied by Allie on vocals. Adele has never sounded so sweet! Actually it was probably a good thing that Jem wasn't home as he has threatened to go utterly, nutterly postal if he hears another Adele song. Ever. Max serenaded Mich in the kitchen on Al's Hello Kitty axe, which I am sure can only add to his cred as a muso. I'm still not quite sure why it didn't occur to us to ask Max to take the photos, either...duh.

And the pav? Well, it started off really well. But as things happen when you talk and drink too much early in the day (particularly for Mich who is normally a non-partaker), well... sometimes you need to be a little inventive. You know, keep it loose. Be confident that it will taste amazing, no matter what it ends up looking like. And let me assure you, it tasted amazing. My fillings hurt. Just don't ever ask her for the recipe - there's no way she'll ever be able to recreate this one!

coastal shopping highlight - Queenscliff's Tobias and the Cat

Hello and Happy New Year!

Well, you realise you've been off the blog for way too long when you have to sign into your google account and can't remember your password, hey? Having sorted that out, and feeling very refreshed after a gorgeous eight days in Ocean Grove, I thought I'd kick off the year by raving about a gem of a store in Queenscliff. Open just three weeks, Tobias and the Cat is a little treasure trove in Hesse Street. It's previous incarnation was a stall at The Mill vintage market in Newcomb (I went looking for it there and was dismayed to see it had gone - but the kind peeps tipped me off about the new store, thanks).

Excuse my dodgy iphone images, but I think you can get the picture - Tobias and the Cat has a seriously gorgeous collection of vintage wares and paintings by local artists. I wandered around, wanting to take everything home, but eventually settled on this fab framed medal poster (I've hung it here in my loungeroom, below). Now I can't wait to get back there, but first of all, I have to uncover my desk from the rubble of work and props thrown there in manic haste at the end of last year - blah!

geek chic shoot this week...

I am up to my armpits in a big corporate brochure shoot this week - one which has seen me running over town finding props and costuming from many, disparate equipment suppliers: medical, surgical, road safety, scientific, stationery - even bowling! We are two days down and one to go, then aaaaaah, some holidays! But what a great way to end the year - working on a wonderful creative brief, with very talented and really lovely people!

Life swap, Kathryn? Go on...

I got a lovely surprise in my letterbox when I arrived home from a shoot this afternoon - I found not one, but two copies of the January edition of Country Style. In it is the story I wrote and styled about Kathryn Brain and her life in Swan Bay, Victoria. Kathryn is the very talented quilter behind the Maggie & Sparrow label, and let's just say, her life is idyllic. I think Jem and the girls found me quite unbearable for a few weeks after this shoot. Apparently I did not stop banging on about moving to the country, needing a view, getting some chickens, spending more time quilting...I may have even mentioned wanting another baby!!! Man, I had it bad. If you don't mind a bit of life envy, make sure you check it out in the January edition of Country Style, on sale very soon.

Jane and I are selling our Mag Square prop table, dammit!

Despite both of us wanting to keep this table setting, Jane and I have finally admitted that neither of us can squeeze it into our already overstuffed homes. Therefore, with much reluctance, I listed it on ebay last night. Soooo, if you live in Melbourne and think this table would look amazing in your own home, hop over and check it out here.

It's a five day listing, so if you snap it up, how amazing would your Christmas dinner look on it? And how good would my veranda look, without it sitting there wrapped in plastic?

a very doggie christmas!

I haven't posted a gratuitous Dougal pic for a while... so here is my boy, resplendent in his Santa suit, pumped for the doggie park Christmas party held at 8.30am this morning. All the gang came, decked out in their best Christmas kit, quietly indulging / suffering their owners for as long as they could manage. Dougal's suit lasted about 3 minutes before he tore it to shreds, then tried to eat every other dog's tinsel/hat/jingely bell. Special mention must go to the park's elder statesman, Chester, who was loving himself sick in his Raybans, and stayed in character for the whole party - I think his human may have taught him a thing or two about partying, just quietly! Delicious treats were provided for all - smoked salmon, croissants, champagne and of course, doggie biscuits. An excellent morning, that reminded me once again of the amazing benefits of dog ownership - unswerving love and loyalty, incredible (and unexpected) community friendship, and the perfect excuse to drink champagne before breakfast!

This week's big event - the Grade Six graduation dinner!

Yep, it's fever pitch around here. Adrenalin is running waaayyyy high. This week we have the Year Six kids' night of nights - the one they have been dreaming of since Prep. The girls have been planning their ensembles for, like, forevverrrr, and I have it on good authority that dresses have been tried on, photographed, uploaded for peer approval, purchased by bewildered parents, then carefully packed away until the big night. Or until they are proudly showcased for siblings and grandparents - and anyone else who happens to wander through your 'hood. Accessories have been added and subtracted. Intense negotiations have been in play regarding the important issue of The Heel: should they wear them? How high is too high? Do we really, actually, mind? In my case, with a daughter who expertly climbed trees in her Barbie plastic heels at age 3, it was an argument I was never going to win. I am happy to report that we reached a compromise (impasse?) - bless the kitten heel.

Like so many mums across the country, a team of us have been meeting regularly (I know, I know, I missed most of them) to plan our kids Year Six graduation dinner. Two years ago I was quite bah-humbug about it all as I really didn't get how important these nights could be. Then, at Annebelle's grad, I literally sobbed through 30 speeches. Some were given by kids I didn't even know, but they were so heartfelt and earnest, recounting their experiences: their highs; and sometimes lows; it still gives me shivers down my spine. Needless to say, I am all for this ceremony now. I think it is an important rite of passage. From next February, things are about to get a whole lot more grown-up and serious for these little guys and girls.

My contribution has been to make some decorations for our lovely new school hall. The colours of green and blue with bit of raspberry were chosen, and on Saturday I turned the loungeroom into a little sweat shop and churned out the table runners, bunting, some signs and vases. Allie provided the child labour, proudly stringing the bunting flags together and now, I think we are almost done. Oh, except for finalising the negotiations re requests for mani's and pedi's on the day. Think I'll be a little bit more strenuous in my arguments around this particular issue!

gorgeous Melbourne home - Maria Malakellis's mid-century marvel!

Here is the wonderful Melbourne base of Maria Malakellis, who owns Kiitos in Barwon Heads. This home has seen a few incarnations - back in the 80's this loungeroom was decorated in a chintzy floral ode to English country style. As Maria's life and style evolved, so too has her home, and wow, look at it now. The rest of the home is in seriously original 60's condition, with a fab formica kitchen and great period features. Maria laughingly says how happy she is now that she couldn't afford to renovate it in the 80's or 90's. Yes, there is a lot to be said for preserving a bit of history - even if you have to wait a few decades to appreciate it!

Nette King Christmas - progress report...

I have really enjoyed reading all the blogs about how everyone gets into the Christmas spirit - particularly when the bloggers show photos of their own homes and Chrissy trees. It seems such a lovely, and quite intimate thing to share so I have decided to do it myself. Here are some snaps from around the Nette King home today.

We missed the 1st of December tradition and didn't get our tree up until Sunday night (the girls were almost frantic). Once again, we used the white fakey (sadly, we are the very allergic family and real trees send us into a month of sneezes, wheezes and watery eyes). And for the (mumble mumble)th year in a row, the doily angel that I made in kindergarten sits on top. Man, has she seen some Christmases. Happy ones, sad ones, brave ones, hilarious ones, drunken ones.....just like every family, I guess.

The girls each have their $5 bargain Big W trees in their bedrooms, the wreath is on the door, and my kooky Gotye film clip inspired Christmas tree that I made for a shoot is propped in the hallway. But we haven't really even started yet!

Get your glam on - Kardashian handbags at Etage.

Let's just say that, at my local dog park, I am not known for my sartorial splendour. My dog park get-up consists of paint stained tracky dacks, any tee-shirt I can lay my hands on (it's usually one of Jem's), gumboots in winter and thongs in summer. No make-up. Hair usually in need of a wash. And a brush. I complete this look with a fine layer of golden retriever hair. Yes, I am the dog park slob.

It doesn't help that I can usually be found standing next to Claire. She's the dog park glam. Impeccably made up, always. Even her gumboots sparkle. She can frequently be seen in sequins. As can her dog, Princess Bobbi Sue-Ellen of Armadale - but that's a whole other post.

It came as no surprise to me to learn that Claire owned a clothing store. It's called Etage, and much to my daughters delight, she has just received a shipment of Kardashian handbags. Now, I don't really get the Kardashians, but I do get these handbags. Particularly the green one. They look really good, and retail between $25 and $110, which is practically free in Kardashian terms. Perfect Christmas presents for the glam types in your life!

the prep is about to start on Allie's Year 6 Gradation dinner decorations

Man. There are so many things I intend to do this weekend:

I am desperate to get to the amazing Lucy Feagin's Design Files Open House. Some excellent house porn / Christmas shopping going on there.

I also really want to get to Magnolia Square at the Malvern Town Hall. It never disappoints.

I want to see New Years Eve - love a rom com. Actually, has it even opened yet?

I can't wait to see Allie's guitar and piano concert (hilariously and bizarrely, Jeremy and I produced a musical child - she's definitely a genetic throwback to previous generations).

I will also be propping madly for a couple of upcoming shoots.

And sewing & crafting some decorations for Allie's Year Six Graduation dinner.

Hmmm, not sure how much I'll get through.

Yep, this shoot I am eyeing off this kooky-hued Acapulco chair from Kiitos. It doesn't look incredibly comfortable, but looks can deceive - it is heaven to lounge in. And if the rain in Melbourne would stop for more than three minutes I would be out there, rotissering this carcass to a crispy brown. Like the good old days.

emotional highs and lows and highs and lows and...

Well, that was a doozy of a weekend! Happy tears one minute. Sad ones the next. Cranky tears the next minute. Embarrassing ones the next.

It started on Friday night, when I not only wept quietly at my gorgeous daughter Allie's singing performance at her end-of-year concert, but every other act as well. Kids trying their best - they just kill me!

Saturday saw the storms - and the loss of all power at our place. Not to worry, we thought, everyone must be in the same boat. Oh how wrong can you be? Lol again.

Then after finishing up my Highpoint Christmas gig on Saturday arvo - where my daughters saw this sign with my name on it and laughed so much that they were crying. I'm talking paroxysms of laughter. Supportive, huh? Well, they were eventually lovely and supportive. Once they stopped laughing.

Home to still no power, and the bad news from the power company. The rain had somehow killed some piece of equipment or something (I was searching for a cold champagne by that point) and they would have to disconnect our power for safety reasons. Overnight. Sad face.

Cue to an extremely Amish evening of take-away by candlelight, and trying to convince two teenagers and a twelve year old that the internet was overrated, and that we could enjoy an evening together actually, you know, speaking. Cue to more hysterical laughter. But you know what? We ended up actually talking, and as lame as it sounds, starting playing an ironic game of charades and ended up - you guessed it - laughing 'til we cried. Well I was crying, but it could have been champagne related.

Sunday - I was having some serious blog reading withdrawals. What was baby-mac up to? What about Pottymouthmama, and oeke? I didn't admit this to anyone though. Instead I spray-painted the pool chairs that had become extremely grubby after winter. And sobbed through the end of my book (Caroline Overington's haunting 'I Came To Say Goodbye').

By 5 o'clock last night we finally had our power reconnected - but if I tell you how many thousands of dollars it cost I may start crying over again. There goes my dream of a little something to hang on the wall by Arite Kannavos for Christmas, or maybe this divine ride from Papillionaire.

We rounded off the weekend with a lovely dinner for Jem's mum's birthday. Happy birthday Jude. We're back on track now. No more tears. Sniff.

Design Dispensary - a dose of great design...

Tucked away in Little Lonsdale Street in Melbourne's CBD is a wonderful store that I have been meaning to blog about for, like, ever. It's called Design Dispensary, and the tag line is, appropriately, 'a dose of design'. Owned by the lovely Samantha, this is the go-to store for architects, designers, and all lovers of good design who want more than the usual, run-of-the-mill, seen-it-all-before homewares and gifts. The stock is predominantly European, with a focus on ethical manufacturing, and of course, aesthetics. The good news for non-Melbournians is that it has a great online shop, www.designforuse.com.au .

Samantha has loads of new stuff arriving this week, just in time for Christmas shopping, so if you find yourself wandering the city with a case of homeware fatigue, head over to see her for an instant cure.

I hope my daughters' teachers don't read this blog (and I'm pretty sure they don't), because if they do, they are about to have their Christmas surprises spoilt. You see, this year I am doing some serious one-stop shopping at my mate Salvation Jane's store. Jane has just released the perfect 'thanks for a year of putting up my kids shenanigans' gift. Yep, the arty tea-towel! So with the possible exception of Allie's very young, very sporty, male teacher, this is what is coming their way. Cos I don't think he'd appreciate a tea towel covered in hearts. Well, certainly not from me, anyway!

I don't know about that.

Is it emo or goth? Do they even do Christmas?

Was it cheap? Hell yes! The black mini-Christmas tree was bought today for just $5 at Big W in Highpoint, and the packet of black deco's? A divine $3.

Too good. Now I am just going to craft up a little black felt angel to pop on top. Then take my Ned Kelly-bearded partner out for a coffee in a cobbled inner-city laneway.

When it came to styling this Savvy Shopper page for the Sunday Age M magazine, all I did was imagine what my dream boudoir would look like - and this is pretty much it. Mine would also have a heaving bookshelf and a bright rug, but that's about it! A little bit boho, a little bit French, a big bit kookster, and wildly romantic. With masses of roses, of course.

Book love: Nomad by Sibella Court

This afternoon I have been endeavouring to finish off the mood boards for the Highpoint styling job I am doing for the next few weekends, but my mind and my eyes keep straying to the beautiful second book by the inspirational Sydney based stylist, Sibella Court. My sister Maggie dropped it into me this morning (a belated birthday present - yay!) and believe me, it is like a little holiday for the eyes. Entitled 'Nomad, bringing your travels home' it documents Sibella's travels through Italy, Japan, Syria, Mexico and India. The pages are exquisite, with beautiful images and stylish, evocative art direction. Believe me, it's the best travel you can do whilst sitting at your desk on a Sunday afternoon. I've photographed a few of my favourite pages, above, and can't wait to settle in and read it thoroughly tonight.

I used to love popping in to Sibella's wonderful bowerbird-style store, The Society Inc, when we lived in Paddington, and her paint colour, Samarkand, is one of my all-time favourite hues. If you also love Sibella's style, pop this book at the top of your Christmas wish-list.

something little pop up shop at the Cubbyhouse Canteen

The very lovely Bec and Narelle who have the Cubbyhouse Canteen in Union Street Park in Armadale (I blogged about it a while ago here) will be hosting a gorgeous shopping event on Sunday 27th November from 4-8pm.

It's called the something little pop up shop, and if you are smart you can get the jump on your Christmas shopping as there will be heaps of gorgeous books, art, prints, jewellery, soft furnishings and cards for sale. All products are unique and original, and created by artists that celebrate childhood, motherhood and sisterhood in their work. My home is filling up with loads of goodies ahead of a Christmas gift shoot I am styling next week, and I couldn't help but unwrap this package to see how the divine Amber Apothecary candle would look in my hallway. Pretty good, I think! It's from a fab on-line store called The Noble Box, that is the brainchild of the lovely Karina Reyne (yes, she is a mate, and yes this is an unashamed plug, but I'd do it anyway because it's a gorgeous store!). where did that week go?

yep, only 45 days to go...

I'm an advocate of the blogging school of thought whereby if you don't feel like it, well then... don't blog. So I guess I haven't been feeling the love this last week. It happens. I think it's that time of year when we all panic and realise how much we have to get through before the end of the year. How many of you have been sewing sequins onto your kids ballet costumes, or going batty making jams for school fetes? On top of your day job? And then feeling sick because it's only 45 days until Christmas? Yep 45.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, I have been knee deep in various Christmas styling jobs this week. It's funny, the magazines did their Christmas shoots months ago, the newspapers are doing them now and by the time it's really Christmas, you kinda forget that it's happening. Once I almost forgot to buy my kids easter eggs because I thought we'd already done easter! Luckily the sweet-toothed daughter reminded me.... once or twice.

I'll be doing an extra exciting Christmas activity this year - the lovely peeps at Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong have invited me along to talk about the trends in Christmas table decoration. I do love to set a table, particularly a Christmas table, so I can't wait.

I'll be setting four tables that will highlight the latest trends, and answering any Chrissy style questions you may have. So do come along and ask! I'll be in the forecourt outside Myer and Country Road. Here are the dates:

why did I stop quilting?

Yesterday I did a shoot at the gorgeous home of an incredible quilter, and since then I can't stop wondering, "why on earth did I stop quilting?". I love everything about it: the fabric selection; choosing the theme; the size; the recipient; taking time to hypnotically stitch and stitch and stitch... what happened? We all sleep under the quilts I have made, and each night we drape ourselves in older ones as we lie on the couch to watch TV. I have an embarrassing number of unfinished quilts, so it's time for me to get them out and re-ignite this passion. But hang on, I may have said the same thing here, over a year ago. This time for sure!

the labour exchange...

My excellent friend Jenny E has been threatening to come and trim my unruly hedge for a while. She keeps a very neat hedge at her own home, and clearly, mine was not pleasing her. So over the course of two weekends she has turned up with shears at the ready and knocked mine back into its intended shape. She a total scissorhands, and it is now looking tres Bangay-esque indeed. As part of our labour exchange I am going to paint some stuff for her girls' room. I hope it's a lot of stuff, or I think I may have done much better out of this deal!

White floors. Not in this lifetime...

My floor. What can I say? It drives me nuts. It shits me to tears. Most of the house has baltic pine boards. I used to love them, but it's all over now. They hurt my eyes.

My kitchen floor has been every colour of the rainbow. Yet, each time I see some gorgeous, sublime Scandi home with the white boards, I sigh. So for the last few months I have been trying in vain, again, to be that pristine, cool, white-floored home-owner. Grand fail. I have kids, a job, a dog and a cat - it was never going to be anything but hard work.

So this morning I had exactly one spare hour between Annebelle's ongoing orthodontic adventure, and a meeting, so I gave the repulsive white floor a cursory clean, then splashed around some paint I had stored in the laundry (Dulux Lickedy Lick, left over from the shoot here a while back). So once again, my kitchen floor is hot pink.

I have tried everything - marine paint, sealers, pro-strength stuff that cost a fortune. Nothing really stands up to the everyday wear and tear of family life. So, I have vowed to save my pennies and get all of the floors throughout the house professionally sanded back, properly limed, and sealed. No more painting the floor. Ever.

Has anyone had any luck personally with painted wood floors? If so, I want to know your secrets?

Pomp and Splendour...

Monday was a massive day - it started with a slow drive through hideous rain to Geelong to photograph a gorgeous home that will appear soon in Sunday Life. Mike and I got back to the studio by 2.30ish to start on an M magazine Savvy Shopper shoot. It was a biggy - with floorboards needing to be lugged to the upstairs studio, sets to be rigged, furniture to be hauled. But, there was a ray of sunshine on that cold, wet, busy day - when gorgeous florist Petra Cremming of Pomp and Splendour arrived with the most beautiful buckets of blooms for the shoot.

Petra contacted me a little while ago and told me all about her business - she has been an actress, and now specialises in creating drama of a different kind - with flowers. I asked if she'd like to be involved in this shoot, and proceeded to give her a long-winded description of the kind of floral look I was after - and quick as a flash she came back to me and said, "Yep, got it. Marie-Antoinette meets Frida Kahlo". Yep, she got it, and the flowers were amazing. You will see them in the M Mag in few weeks time.
And, I now have a new favourite rose - Oh Mr Lincoln how amazing you smell!

The old plastic plate has come a long way - when Melbourne art world hipsters like Ghostpatrol, Miso, Dawn Tan, Dylan Martorell and Miranda Skoczek are doing melamine, it must be cool (you can get those ones from Douglas and Hope) . Here's my round-up of the loveliest melamine plates, that appeared in the Sunday Age M Magazine last weekend. My favourite bit though, is the fab faux grass deck chair from Kirsty at Kootoyoo - how clever is it?

I know, I know. I blog this same rose bush every year. But I am sooo obsessed with its beauty. I walk under that arch for 50 weeks of the year and all I get is scratches. But for two glorious weeks, I get to inhale the heady, musky-sweet scent of the Albertine. This year, after all the rain, it is even bigger and more covered in juicy green buds than ever. So, if you need me, this is where you will find me for the next two weeks or so.

Jon Webb exhibition opens today...

I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time loitering about at Decent Exposure Studios in Prahran, and can usually be found painting a flat for a shoot, or cursing some piece of flat pack furniture that won't behave. Or drinking coffee. One of the best things about the studio is the constant stream of lovely photographers, assistants, stylists (food, fashion and home) that you get to chat to, bounce ideas off and mostly, have a bit of a lol with.

One such photographer (and cinematographer!) is the seriously talented Jon Webb, who opens his own exhibition tonight.

It's called 2UP, and it is a collection of his photographs, set in pairs. Here is how Jon describes his show:

All the images are photographs. Some are untouched, some are manipulated.
By working in pairs I try to shift the atmosphere of the image.
I don’t expect you to connect with everything.
I hope you connect with something.

inspiration and serendipity...

I do love a coincidence. And I love searching for meaning in things, and signs. To me, everything is a sign. And I try to only look for good signs.

So tonight when my mate Jane and I popped into the KIKKI.K 10th anniversary celebration, we both felt a definite sense of serendipity. Was it just a coincidence that we went to celebrate the amazing achievements of a Melbourne based woman with a big dream, on the very same day that Jane's homewares line, Salvation Jane Home, launched? Nup. It is totally a sign.

The lovely founder of KIKKI.K, Kristina Karlsson, gave a great speech about her dream, and listed the ideas she came up with at 3am one morning about 12 years ago. Her fabulous partner, Paul, backed her dream, and even sold his house to start up the business (a new contender for partner of the week!). Well, that business is a serious success story, and is about to be an international one at that.

Whether it is a sign. coincidence, whatever - Jane and I were inspired. We were whispering furiously, "right, that's it. No sleep tonight. I'll be doing my business plan".

Before we left we were invited to write down our dreams for ten years from now on a leaf shaped card, and then hang it on a beautiful white wish tree. I am a bit ashamed to say that after I read through mine I realised they all involved real estate and the good health of my family - awks - so I popped world peace on the end, to assuage my greedy guilt. Kind of...

As an endnote, my daughters have become quite the connoisseurs of the event gift bag. The love to tear them out of my hands on my arrival home, then pilfer anything they fancy. Then they give them a quite brutal rating. As only kids can. The gift bag tonight got our highest rating ever. Just have a look at that little storage box cake - heaven!

Anyway, here's to dreams.

gorgeous Melbourne home - Cherie Winter's lounge to studio conversion...

Yes, that is Cherie Winter and her husband, Michael Desmond's, lounge room. Well, it was, until she took possession of that wonderful litho printing press. The loungeroom was the only place it could fit, so Michael suggested that they use the (compact) second bedroom as a loungeroom and convert the lounge into a studio for Cherie. How good is he? He wins husband of the week, don't you think? Cherie is a wonderful artist and her next exhibition starts on the 20th at the Gilligan Grant Gallery in Collingwood.

Last weekend I picked up these gorgeous pressed tin panels to use as a background in an upcoming shoot. They are deliciously peely and flaky - with just the right amount of tat. But now I can't stop wondering where they would work in my home. Maybe I could just hammer them randomly into the bathroom wall? Or the hallway? Oh dear, I've come over all avaricious and covetous again. I want to throw out everything I own and start again. But with better stuff. Being surrounded by luscious homewares does that to me. This evening, my glamorous assistant slash daughter Annebelle and I popped along to check out the incredibly luxe and beautiful Sonia Rykiel Maison range at Madame B in Prahran. Hopefully we didn't leave drool marks on anything. Infused with the usual wit and charm of Rykiel, the range includes throws, cushions, bean bags (they are so gorgeous it almost seems insulting to call them that), fabrics and towels. Oh the towels...

If it is a slice of the Left Bank that you are after, look no further than Madame B. I wrote about its owner, the beautiful Maria Barkley a while back here. The shop has been open one year now, and it's got a great mix of chic fashion, accessories, books, gifts, perfume and homewares. And it always smells great.

store visit to Kiitos in Barwon Heads...

So, I guess that's it for the school holidays! Tomorrow it's back to the lunch box grind and the quickest term of the year. We had a mixed bag of a holiday- an aborted trip to Sydney, plans made then un-made, loads of work in between kid commitments - the usual stuff. We finished the break with a trip down to Ocean Grove - and I must say, Ocean Grove and surrounds are not the shopping wasteland that they used to be. I hate to do the "I remember when..." but I do remember when Skinners was the shopping highlight of the main street (cue to lols from long-time OG visitors). Even just a few years ago, I could only get my shop on at the various oppies dotted around the Bellarine Peninsula. Not so now, as a visit to OG isn't complete without a quick trawl through The Mill in Newcomb, a trip to Kyo, a pop into a relative (and very lovely) newcomer, Stone and Grain and a walk over that bridge to check out Kiitos in Barwon Heads.

Kiitos Living by Design opened in December 2009 and quickly took the BH shopping scene into a new league. Owner, Maria Malakellis has a long family history of trading in Barwon, as her parents owned the much-loved fish and chip shop for years. Looking for a career change, Maria took on the challenge of a prime, but neglected, site in Bridge Road and hasn't looked back since. She stocks the full range of Marimekko, has the import licence for those covetable acapulco chairs, plus a hand picked bunch of Aussie and international design favourites such as Muuto, Design House Stockholm, Fink & co, Eva Solo and Karen Walker. It's a big, bright hit of retail fun, just metres from the sand. And, Maria is just back from the trade fair in Paris, so she's expecting shipments of even more loveliness.

I also picked up a few lovely props around the place - will show and tell soon.

The Paint Job, continued...

Here's some more on my recent job for Dulux. This is the home office / reading room I created from the 'Re-set' palette. Yes, I managed to squeeze in a few trophies, and yes, that is an Ampersand cushion from Aunty Cookie - Shannon kindly lent me heaps of her gorgeous wares for the shoot, as you will spy in the following shots. Must say I am a bit addicted to the deep grey Moon Marvel colour when it's next to the Metallic 'Moon Marvel'.

Next up is the Raw palette, in which I was thinking about a beautiful room in a ranch or a ski-lodge - somewhere to curl up and relax after an exhausting day of riding or skiing or hiking. The wall was painted with the beautifully textural Suede Effect paint in Faux Leather, with Beige Royal stripes. The lovely big chaise and wooden boxes are from Freedom.

Then comes the 'Time-Honoured' palette. I love red in kitchens - all those sayings about it being the heart of the home, and 'if you can't stand the heat, get outta the kitchen' really conjure images of fiery warmth and comfort. This wild red is called Macdonnel Ranges.

Finally, here's my second fave - the 'Nurture palette', which was shot in my bedroom and hallway. Green is my thing at the moment, and the idea of nurture/nature/chicken/egg/growth/rebirth inspired this room. The bedroom walls are done in Gooseberry Fool and the hallway is in Suede Effect 'Zoe's garden'. The beautiful light fitting is from Design Dispensary and the divine green Featherston was kindly loaned to me by my mate Jen. Teacup is from the House of Orange.

The paint job...

I may have mentioned about a brazillion times before that I am a complete demon with a paintbrush. Everything around here seems to get painted if it stands still for long enough. So I was totally in my element when Dulux asked me to style some rooms in their fab new 2012 colour palettes. It started off as three rooms, but somehow turned into six, so for a month or so all I could think about was paint. And all my family heard about was paint. And all my friends heard about was paint. Sorry guys!

It all started with the delivery of six white envelopes containing the six palettes that were developed by Dulux's incredible colour guru, Andrea Lucena-Orr. I narrowed down my favourite shades from each palette and started to put together some mood boards.

After much adding, subtracting, to-ing and fro-ing, the boards filled up and the rooms came together. And the best part? I didn't have to do the painting as Dulux supplied their star painters to carry out my ideas. Heaven! Three of the rooms were located at a fabulous beach house on the peninsula, and the other three rooms we used were here, at my home. I was very lucky to work with the highly respected photographer, Mauro Pomponio, who Dulux has trusted with its images for many years. We had two very long, crazy days of shooting at both locations, but loads of lols and fun as well.

My dining room was the first to get the Dulux treatment, with the deep, inky, dive-into blues of the Immerse palette. Not even my dining table and chairs escaped the paintbrush, each being painted a different delicious blue. Here are a few of my favourite shots from this series.

I thought the undercoat looked really elegant too!

My lovely Annebelle's room was the next to be transformed, in a fabulous, Lady Ga-Ga inspired palette of hot pinks and purples. Here is the delightful master painter, Sohrab, showing us his steady hand.

Here is how Annebelle's room turned out. I am very glad to say that she loved the stripes and decided to keep them!

I swear that one day I will own this incredible Airia desk by Hermann Miller. I think it is the most elegant and beautiful desk in the world. Just look at those legs. I'll sit it in a bay window, overlooking a crazy, wild, perfumed garden. One day. You can hold me to it.

In the meantime, I was very happy to pretend it was mine for a day when we shot this Savvy Shopper page about 'the art of writing', which ran in the Sunday Age M magazine yesterday. I'm also crazy about that bookshelf wallpaper from Scandinavian Wallpaper and Decor.

I have been adding to a few collections lately. No big splurges - just good, clean collecting fun. Then I started thinking about what I am collecting, and wondering why...

I collect old trophies when I never won one myself...well, that's kinda awkward!

Last night my mate Jen and I made a snap decision to head off early this morning to the Coburg Trash and Treasure market. Actually, we were a bit over-enthusiastic and got there before it opened, but at least that meant we were fully awake by the time we hit the stalls. We ended up with a mixed bag, with the score of the day going to Jen, who picked up the lovely antlers for not very much at all. I bought Mary early, and had to lug her around like a babe in arms all morning. Questionable/hilarious purchase of the day also went to Jen - with the Nana Mouskouri vinyl, lol. It's a funny old place, but if you are happy to pick through the lawn mowers, tools, old toys, and some suspiciously close to use-by date food, you can certainly find some gold.

It was a busy week, but I don't have much to show for it. Worked on two cute shoots, but can't show them yet. Started work on an exciting new project helping to decorate a gorgeous home, but again, zip to show. Today I did manage to finally hang up the daisy chandelier I bought at a house wreck sale a month or so ago. And picked the first blooms from the lilac.

gorgeous Melbourne home - Kirsty Macafee's wonderful family abode

Sometimes when Mike Baker and I turn up to a home to shoot a page for the Sunday Age/Sun Herald M magazine, he could literally point his camera in any direction, and it would capture loveliness. Kirsty Macafee's home is one of those - it is light, airy, homely, and if finding cool stuff was an Olympic sport, Australia would have a serious champion in Kirsty.

I love the line in her interview when Kirsty says "It's all about nostalgia for me... I like things that remind me of my childhood, my grandparents, my family, our hobbies". Well, a home put together with that kind of sentiment and love will always win hands down to one put together with a massive cheque book as far as I am concerned!

Likewise, Kirsty's blog, www.kootoyoo.com is thoughtful, inspiring and very beautiful. Can you tell I am a fan?

weekend highlight - a visit to Widow Twankey's Confectionery Emporium.

The minute we mention to our youngest sweet-tooth that we are planning a trip to the country, her eyes light up and she says "Yesssss! Widow Twankey's". From then on she doesn't let up until we have visited this gorgeous 'confectionary emporium', at least once. But just look at the place - don't you think this is exactly what a fine lolly establishment should look like? Mouthwateringly decadent. Today we stocked up on chocolate pencils, chocolate coated raspberries, raspberry drops and of course, umbrella lollypops. Oh, and they make a great chocolate milkshake.

When I think of Chevrons, I must admit that the first thought that pops into my mind is of sneaking, underage, into the St Kilda Road nightclub of that name when I was doing year 12. Then all I can think of is my girlfriends and I dancing around our handbags.. and after that it is all a blur of shoulder pads and court shoes and pale lipstick and a strange drink called a Rusty Nail... I think the old Chevron, like just about every other building in Melbourne is an apartment block now. Probably a good thing, actually.

But I digress... here is a page I styled for the Sunday Age M Magazine, featuring the chevron, aka the zigzag, the herringbone, the flamestitch - whatever you like to call it.

Big props to the lovely Kylie from the Goldchalk blog who came along on the day to help out. Marking out and painting those lines on the flat was painstaking and time-consuming and without Kylie there, I think 1 may have ended up in tears, so thanks Kylie! Here's a peek behind the scenes.

Lubra Bend garden visit today

Lubra Bend, an amazing Victorian Garden

Today my mum and I drove out to the beautiful wine district of Yarra Glen to visit the amazing garden of Rosemary Simpson. Wow, was it worth the drive!

I had been hearing about the garden, 'Lubra Bend', for some time from my lovely dog park friend, Sarah, whose mother is the owner and inspired plantswoman behind the amazing transformation of this garden.

When she acquired the home and garden 11 years ago, it was set behind a large cypress hedge/windbreak, and was filled largely with European plants including camellias, magnolias and roses. Rosemary has worked both within this framework, and also extended the garden, creating an amazing dry garden and rockpool planted mostly with species indigenous to the local area and also, some Australian natives. Rosemary's brief to her landscaper, the award-winning Philip Johnson, was that the garden must need no watering - and brilliantly it is all serviced by rainwater captured on the roof of the home. When you enter the garden through an arch in the hedge (and you know I am a sucker for an arched entry) the sound that greets you is that of six different species of frogs, happily ribbip-ing away in the pond. The garden has been extended in stages and now meanders all the way down to the Yarra. It is truly exquisite.

The garden is open again tomorrow, Sunday 11th, so if a Sunday drive is on the agenda, do head this way.

Ikea Springvale - it's no Småland!

This morning I trekked out along Dandenong Road to attend a media tour of the new IKEA store in Springvale. There I was, peering out my side window, searching in vain for a street number, when I turned my gaze ahead and out of the distance arose the blue and yellow monolith that is the new store - let me tell you, no street numbers are required. It is huge!

How huge? The size of two MCG's (that's 36,000 square metres, or half as big as the Richmond store again).

How huge? The walking track through the store is two km's (long enough to justify the $1 hotdog on exit, I say)

How huge? There are 63 room-sets that display the 9000 IKEA products.

And the IKEA people have really used the size to their advantage. What I liked most was the use of areas to create inspirational sets (see the dining room and book room ones below). The visual merchandisers have really had fun with these areas, and they do provide a breath of fresh air in the product laden store.

I know I blogged about my Sydney mate Michelle Schoep's beautiful food blog when it was in its infancy - but for newbies to my blog, it is really worth saying again - this girl, and her cooking, are the real deal.

Mich is a born cook, and a natural food stylist. Her cooking style comes from the purest place - she wants to feed her boyfriend, their kids and herself the most wholesome and delicious food available. I popped onto Mich's blog today to look up her meatball recipe (because I had it at my friend Di's home on Saturday night and I need it again - btw Di is soon to commence her own food blog - I will keep you posted) and I was blown away by the beautiful images and the mouth-watering recipes. You know how some foods can make you homesick? I must admit that I almost teared up thinking of how Mich and I would walk endless laps of Centennial Park, talking endlessly of food (all the while bemoaning our wobbly bits, lol). I used to ask Mich what to cook for dinner. She'd tell me, and that was it - no real thought required on my behalf, as for me, inspiration is always the hardest part of cooking. And my favourite? Her goulash is a triumph!

Next week I am finally going to give this girl a make-over. Just today, I got around to shedding her dodgy velvet coat, which revealed her original pale crimson upholstery. I first thought I'd give her another pale rose outfit, but after seeing her look so fab in hot pink last weekend, that's where my head is at now.

the indoor garden...

I have such a thing for indoor plant life at the moment. After years of cringing at fishbone and maiden-hair ferns, I am right back loving them. I know the look has been back for a while now, but honestly, it has taken me a while to embrace it.

I also want to create a vertical garden wall outside, but have yet to start researching it - has anyone done one, and can they give me some tips? I figure a vertical garden may be too hard for even Dougal the diggingest dog to ruin... but then again.

Here is an indoor garden-themed page I came up with for the Sunday Age. I made a cheats vertical garden wall by raiding my sister, Maggie's, garden of loads of luscious greenery then I stuffed it all into a wire frame I found hanging around the studio. I got to feature some of my favourite products - The Monkey Grip pots designed by Adam Cornish, and the Rio Tower by Joost. And as for that vintage zinc florists vase from Nyary 604 - I have no words!

Gorgeous Melbourne home - Tom Adair & Nikki Williams' Richmond terrace

How cool is Tom Adair and Nikki William's home? When I walked in and saw how they had transformed a seriously daggy and run-down home into this fab, almost loft-like space, I was hooked. Tom sanded and limed the baltic pine floorboards himself (something I wish I had the strength to do here at my place). They have THE most well-trained dog I have ever met in Sookie (named after Sookie Stackhouse from True Blood - more coolness). Now, Tom may look like a rock-star (I really hope he doesn't mind me saying that), but he is actually the very clever creative director at Abode Living. He also paints, under the pseudonym of Juan Mcarb, and Nikki is an international buyer for Forever New. Even more coolness. Sigh...

Magnolia Square - done and dusted...

Well, Magnolia Square is done and dusted. And judging by the vibe there, loads of customers and stall-holders went home very happy indeed!. Here's a few more pic's of the 'How to Save Your Stuff with Paint, Paper and Fabric' installation that Jane and I put together for the show. We would love to thank Dulux for the beautiful blue paint for the table and chairs (it's called Norfolk Sky) and lovely Louise from Table Tonic who kindly lent us the beautiful silk ikat cushions for said chairs. Oh, and Mike Baker for the stands and paper (and for visiting us, lol), Shannon for the fabric and wallpaper, Jenny for the boxes, Kirsty for the extra props, Maggie for the foliage, Emma for the delicious madeleines and our gorgeous friends and family who came along to support us. Oh, and Nic and Metka from Mag Square for inviting us!

Magnolia Square - day one

Phew, I am just back home after a 5am start bumping in to the wonderful Magnolia Square market the The Centre in Ivanhoe.

Jane and I had a fab day: we met loads of lovely stall holders and visitors to the market; we both had family and friends pop in to say hello and to see our displays (see above for a peek at our 'Fabric Salvation' installation on the magically fairy-lit stairs); and the vibe at the market was really great - but what is not to love about a well-curated collection of stalls tempting you with loveliness?

We'll be back there tomorrow, so if you get a chance, do pop by and say hello. We'd love it.

Salvation Jane and I have been hard at it again today...well, as hard at it as you can be when you factor in school drop- off and pick-up. The top coat was applied to the chairs (and my hedge - blue hedge anyone?). We then broke out the rest of the paint and I must say Jane coped extremely well with the orange. You can check it out over at her blog. Finally we sorted the fabric and began the painstaking pinning process. Lots more to do but it is all good fun when the job is shared.

Well, in my case, that translates to "some salty chips and some bubbles make working on the weekend so much more fun". Jane and I got stuck into the painting yesterday ahead of next weekend's Magnolia Square. We broke out the brushes and trusty spray gun and set to it with the paint so kindly donated to us by the generous peeps at Dulux paints. Why is it that painting sounds so quick and easy, then when you get started you remember - the sugar soap cleaning, the sanding, the undercoat, the top coats. But then, when it's all over you are so in love with the result that you forget all the tedious bits? Kinda like childbirth, isn't it? Well, we are certainly in love with these babies!

I found these great bolts of fabric at the Sacred Heart Mission op shop on Chapel Street yesterday. Not sure what will become of them, but when I propped them up against the cupboard, I was instantly reminded of this girl I went to RMIT with who got married and had rainbow bridesmaids.

I was fascinated. So I googled rainbow bridesmaids. Still fascinated. They kill me.

Is that a little Jonathan Adler inspired makeover happening on my veranda?

Regular readers will know that I am not averse to a paint brush. I love to get my hands on some beautiful but decrepit old thing and give it a colourful revamp. Hell, I even read colour specifiers in the bath! I just don't get bland. Or neutrals. I have a like-minded mate over at Salvation Jane, who also loves nothing better than to break out a sample pot and indulge in a little hue. Only she doesn't do orange - but that is a whole other story...

So, the good lady Salvation and I were very chuffed to be approached to team up and do a bit of a colourwork at the next Magnolia Square event, to be held at The Centre in Ivanhoe on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August - yikes, that's only ten days away!

The theme of this Magnolia Square is colour - so together, Jane and I are putting on a bit of a side-show to demonstrate how we like to 'upcycle' (apparently that's a euphemism for tarting things up!) with paint, paper and, of course, fabric.

My house is still a tip, but slowly things are coming together ahead of a big shoot here this week. You still can't walk down the hallway without injuring yourself, and half of my furniture has been unceremoniously dumped on the side veranda.

And much to their delight, my girls have rediscovered the joys of sharing a bedroom - oh how I jest!

Today is my final prep day and I just did the run to the flower wholesalers in Carnegie - so at least the flowers look pretty!

Wow there are so many great coat, hat & umbrella stands out there on the market. I had no trouble rounding up a selection of the best across all price points for this Sunday Age M magazine Savvy Shopper page that ran today. In fact, there were about five others that I couldn't get my hands on for the shoot - but I guess if I had used them all then the page would have become a little crazy.

I am loving the look of grey and yellow together at the moment - splashed with a bit of silver and black it is a really smart and stylish palette.

some serious Country Style...

Right now, my house resembles a tip. The furniture from three rooms has been shoved into the hallway and onto the veranda, and drop sheets are lying everywhere as these rooms are painted in preparation for a big shoot here next week. I am squished up in my little desk area, trying to get some work done, and trying to think straight, when all I want to do is curl up in a ball on the couch and read my new County Style mag (the August edition that goes on sale tomorrow, but my subscription copy just arrived).

In it is my very first story for Country Style (cue to big, happy face here!). I was lucky enough to meet the very talented interior decorator Genevieve Buchanan at an industry event a while back, and when we got chatting (and chatting and chatting) Genevieve mentioned that she had an old home in the country that she was doing up. Naturally I told her that if she ever wanted to do a story about the home, to please remember me! Fortunately she did, and a few weeks later when she sent me some reccie shots of her grand old bluestone squatters residence, I nearly fell off my chair. It is seriously gorgeous. The lovely people at Country Style thought so too, so a shoot date was organised with the INCREDIBLE photographer Sharyn Cairns. If you are a city girl who likes the idea of a move to the country, but has some qualms about how you would cope - look no further than Genevieve for inspiration.

Once again, thank you to the divine Buchanan clan, who warmly welcomed me into their home for both the interview and the shoot, and for not laughing at me too much when I straddled an electric fence...well not in front of me anyway!!!

Gorgeous Melbourne home - Arite and Louis Kannavos' colourful crib

Yum. That's what I thought when I first clapped eyes on artist Arite Kannavos' cushions at Gaudions. Then when I saw her paintings - I think I may have drooled. As it would follow, her apartment /studio is a feast for the colour-hungerers, like myself. This is my kinda world. And she is my kinda girl - clever, talented and very, very lovely.

Arite's art is available at the fabulous Gilligan Grant Gallery in Collingwood, and her cushions, made under the banner of Canter and Cave, are available from Gaudions in High Street Prahran.

And as much as I dig that kooky re-upholstery job, I am going to have her restored to her former glory, in a pale rose wool. One day...

a little taste of Freedom...

For the past few weeks I have been literally chained to my job... deadlines, captioning, shoots, sourcing, painting stuff, returning other stuff to stores, conjuring, neglecting my blog.... And I promise I am not having a whinge about work (well, maybe just a little), but I just had 24 whole hours off - and I can't tell you what fun it was to jump on a plane to Sydney on Wednesday morning to attend the launch of Freedom's Summer 2011 range. Yes, the extremely generous peeps at Freedom sprang for an airfare and an overnighter for media to attend a fab launch at the CarriageWorks in Everleigh. The event was beautifully styled by uber-stylist Megan Morton, and we were given an insight into the inspiration behind the new range, in particular the Limited Edition pieces. Now, I am not a cash for comment kinda girl, so you can believe me when I tell you that this range is even better than what we saw earlier this year when Freedom first introduced their new direction. I love a bit of a brand re-birth - remember when Witchery reinvented itself years ago? It went from a no-go zone to a must-have brand, in just a season or two. Well, it looks like Freedom is doing the same. The pieces are clever, confident, quirky and, best of all, reasonably priced.

So here I am back at my desk after that little taste of freedom, it's heads down again for me.

make and do mail...

My mail was a lot more interesting than usual today. Yes, there was still the usual amount of boring bills, but a few lovely surprises came as well. First up, I opened a clever little invitation to the launch of the Freedom Furniture Summer range - it came with directions and folds to create this chair. And I love the combination of red toile de jouy and vivid yellow. Very cool.

Next up was a handmade photographic lantern called the t.lighthouse. It was designed by Mariana Garcia-Katz of m2matiz to announce the opening of the Tait Outdoor showroom in Sydney, and it features the beautiful contemporary Jak+Jil outdoor setting.

I love a bit of make and do, and who doesn't love an invitation? Wish the mail was this interesting every day.

My hallway is starting to fill up ahead of a few shoots this week. One piece that I couldn't resist giving a road test is this gorgeous hat & coat stand called 'Stem' by DesignByThem, a young, Sydney based design studio. Hmmm, it looks pretty damn good here.

Who knows...these could end up hideously crapulous, or pure gold.

But for ten bucks at the Rosebud (I think, I was a bit lost) Salvos on the way home from a house reccie today, it was worth the gamble. Yep, two chairs and a two-seater for ten dollars. They were probably lovingly crafted in a man-shed by an old bloke called Noel, or Ted. Hopefully I'll do him proud - if the results are any good, don't worry, you'll hear about it.
